Vagal afferent pathway senses hormones released from the gut in response to nutritional cues and relays these signals to the brain. The current data of de Lartigue et al. strongly suggest that cutting the connection between the gut and the brain by deleting the leptin signaling in the vagal afferent pathway is a novel mechanism for the initiation of obesity.
